Cloth diapers are so cute and getting more so each day! When I first started 5 years ago there were not as many styles or choices. They were also really expensive. If you want to buy them from a store and get the name brands they are still expensive. Me, personally I can go the “gently used route” and be happy. Saving money is more important than wearing a name brand.
We have a family of four boys, and I homeschool. That means that my husband is the sole supporter of our family. We do not have alot of “extras” so I try to save money wherever possible. If I save money in one are such as using cloth diapers, or clipping coupons then that will free up some money to save for a vacation or add to our future retirement account.
Here are 3 reasons that I choose to cloth diaper:
1. It saves money for our family.
Being a one income family limits our choices. If I can save $300.00 per year on diapers so that we can take that for a vacation or add to Christmas then it is worth it.
2. It adds to the bottom line on purchases.
Saving money is not easy. I can find a million things that I want. But I have to delay those wants and focus on needs. The needs of my family. It is not just me anymore or my desires. I don’t use cloth diapers and grumble about them. I PREFER to use them over disposables. Using cloth diapers does add one load of laundry to my schedule every other day. But when I go to the grocery store then I know that the $40.00 I would use to buy diapers (I go to Sams and buy in bulk) will go for snacks, meat, noodles, or whatever to feed our family.
3. Savings account
The money that I save goes into our savings budget. When we sit down to do our bills I figure in what to save first. I pay us. Using cloth diapers allows this amount to be larger. I did use washcloths for baby wipes but that did not work as well as I wanted. At one time I was saving $60.00 a month by using cloth diapers and wipes. That was my income that I added to our family.
Decide on your “why” to cloth diaper. Even if you are the only person cloth diapering that is what matters. When you cloth diaper you have to love it or you won’t follow through and eventually will quit.
If you are a stay at home mom like me saving money is your income. You are adding to your family’s financial goals. When doing the extra “load” of laundry remember the reason behind what you are doing. I would not change my decision to use cloth diapers and all of the reasons because they are my reasons. Don’t make any decisions for your children that you don’t love.
