College is around the corner for our family. It really is hard to believe that I will have a son in college. It has been a long road, and I don’t feel like my job as mom is done. There is so much advice to give, and so many lessons he will have make for himself. Kids grow up very quick. When they are little it is all fun and playtime, but time slips away and then the realization sets in that only a few years remain to teach. Teach them about life. Teach them about morality. Teach them how to make a good decision so that the rest of their life will not be affected.
College Bound
Grades, applications, scholarships, SAT’s, grants, and federal applications are important to get into college. But once they are in college what comes next? We drop off our children that we have protected for 18 years and now in the time they need us most strangers are supposed to teach them how to live life.
Getting in college is one thing, but getting through college is another. In no way do I want my son’s values and morals to change because of what other people are doing. Parents hold onto your children, and guide them through the tough decisions. Communicate as much as possible so that when in trouble you know they will make the right decision.
While at college young adults will encounter many different situations. Some are good, but many are bad. If we have taken the time to stand by their side, it is safe to say that getting through the college years will be more bearable.
How to Handle an Uncomfortable Situation
Make sure that your teenager knows how to get out of a sticky situation with grace and ease. Peer pressure is no fun as all of the moms reading this recall. Go over and role play ways for a graceful escape.
Help Teenagers Keep Their Future in Sight
Just because our teenagers want freedom does not necessarily mean they need it. Keeping their future in perspective and talking about the consequences of actions will assist them to make good decisions. If a teenager has worked hard to get to an internship, or college that they desire reminding them of good behavior is a must. Never stop being a parent.
Don’t Quit Parenting Yet
Everyone can always benefit from knowledge. As the saying goes, “Knowledge is power”. There is a time to completely let go, but even as young adults grow and have families on their own helpful, gentle advice can always be useful. Stay in touch with your children. Even if they push you away, don’t go away. Protect them like the helicopter mom that existed when they were babies.
Many people choose to let teenagers make bad decisions to learn from, but that could cost them their future or their life. Continue urging them on the right path to church and family. Have you found encouraging ways to help your teenager make good decisions?
Cheers.
