Homeschool preschool letter N activities are surrounding the annual flower species Nemophilia. These flowers are often identified as “baby blue eyes” in most of their names. I like to teach my preschooler all about nature, because then they have the opportunity to grow up loving it. Exploring nature has always been something we do with all of our children. They have usually been on their first long hike by the time they have reached one year of age.
My homeschool preschool curriculum centers around flowers that teach children the ability to learn and name. My biggest regret that I have as an adult is the lack of knowledge I have in identifying different species in nature. Although I am getting better since I am a homeschool mom and we do weekly nature studies. My goal is to know as much as my kids.
Here is a glimpse of how I would teach my nature study:
Homeschool Preschool Letter N Handwriting
Letter N handwriting activities include practicing the capital N. Practice at this age isn’t going to be perfect. Getting the homeschool preschool student to see the capital letter N is important. Perfection comes when they are older. Right now, I want them to see it, say it and recognize the letter.
After we have watched how to trace the letter N, let the preschooler try it. Be very encouraging. At the top of my free printable letter is the the Nemophilia flower. See if they can say the name. Point to the letter N, then the flower and repeat the name.
My personal view on the handwriting is to save it, and when they have completed the entire flower handwriting set that I have, put it together. When they turn 18 give it to them at their graduation. Memories are either good or bad and hopefully they will look back fondly at the time they learned to write.
Reading
Next, read to them the letter N book. I have an older set of books that focus on the letters of the alphabet, but I am sure Amazon has something current. Then choose a few easy words to write on index cards. Write the words and help them read them.
Each day, during review time go over the words. Review time should be short and last only 5- 10 minutes at this stage. Daily review of the letter N words, flower and handwritten letter will seal it forever in their memory. Try to read the book during the week more than once. If you are like me then during read aloud time give them a snack. It helps them to focus and forget the fact they have already heard this book.
Nature Study
Nature study is going to be drawing the flower. Some of the flowers in this series may not be available in your zone, but they are always available on the internet. Pull up an image for them to see and copy. If they want to color it in, that is fine too. Likewise, grab a nice journal for them to use each week to add in their new flower. As they complete the entire alphabet series and learn different flowers it can become a reference.
Adding in the nature study at a young age with a homeschool preschool student again is important. Use the nature study day as an opportunity to talk about flowers, how to care for them and visit the park. This will become something they look forward to each week.
Math
Math with flowers. It is possible. Homeschool preschool is a good time to implement some easy math addition problems. Use the flowers as a guide and write out with pictures some math equations. Visuals work well at this age, and I like to use hands-on materials to make the connection. You may not have the right flower, but grab a cheap bouquet at the grocery store and use them for the math problems.
Five to six problems a day is good to help them start identifying with math. Create a fun environment so when math comes at the same time the next day they don’t start to fight it too much. Another good idea is to mix it up, and do math at the beginning of learning time and not at the end.
