Homeschool preschool focus this week is on the letter S. Planning for the week is easy. Pull and print everything related to this letter. For example, any books that focus on the letter S. Games, crafts, printables, and objects. All this S are the center of attention. For the objects place them in easy areas your preschooler will notice them. Index cards with the letter S written on them and taped in places like the bathroom mirror or a closet to keep it in front of them.
The flower for this week is the Shasta Daisy. Admittedly this is my favorite flower. I love Daisies. To start off the week see if the grocery store or a flower market has a bouquet of Daisies. I keep mine on the table so little noses can sniff and fingers can touch. My kids loved to smell the flowers that were set on the table. They still like to look at them, and one of my son’s now has an interest in gardening.
Homeschool Preschool Picture Study
Finding a good picture of a Daisy isn’t hard. Search the internet or a magazine that focuses around flowers. any picture that has daisies in it will suffice. After finding a good picture for homeschool preschool set it up in a place they will see it everyday. For me, I wanted mine protected so I purchased a flyer holder from an office supply store. This worked out well because my preschooler could grab, touch and look at the picture as much as he wanted.
Choose a time when they are finished eating and not too tired to do picture study, as I have found this brings better results. Ask them what they see in the picture and notice if they can identify the bouquet on the table with the flower in the picture. Have them say the name several times. More than once is preferred.
Read Aloud Story Time
I have a series that was written a long time ago, but it is simple and easy to understand. This set was given to me for free and I was grateful. Each week we during our homeschool preschool time I sat down with my preschooler and we read together. As we read we also discussed the illustrations in the book. I still remember these special times with each of my children.
As we finish the book I allow my preschooler to re-tell the story to me in his own words. As he told me the story I asked him a few questions. Then for a few minutes we went through the book identifying the letter S. Don’t forget to download the free printable Letter S handwriting sheet!
Easy Preschool Activity
Our homeschool preschool activity was usually coloring, play doh or a game. The game was something easy a relatable and quick. I purchased a set of bean bags that made up the alphabet. Using an older game of corn hole I set this up in our living room. We through bean bags toward the hole and went through the alphabet. As we did this, I did not tell my son which one was the letter S. He had to find it, and if he was able to get a score with his letter of the week that was double points. For a preschooler this was fun.
Another way to do this is to spell out the flower of the week, Shasta Daisy. Have them identify the letter of the week in the name.
Fun Flower Craft
Finally, wrap up the learning time with a craft for this. I don’t do a craft every week because I felt that was repetitious. One week we bake, another week we do a craft, games or draw. One way to do a craft is to make an S craft. Another idea is a printable S that can be colored and added to the letter of the week poster.
Craft ideas are easy enough to find on Pinterest. Keeping them simple and to the point is important. Paint a Sea horse, or a sailboat on canvas to try something other than coloring. The possibilities are endless to explore.
