Keeping our homes clean is a job that never quits. Over the past year I have developed a few challenges that motivate me to get this work done. A cleaning challenge has been one of the best ways for me to meet my daily goals.
Since I am a homeschool mom to my boys’ and frequently use games to help them learn, I decided to try this with myself. A game to help me get through the housework.
My challenge works three ways and so far is great!
Play a Game
I have some of the dry erase dice that we use a lot in our homeschool learning. First, using the dice idea I wrote down the names on each room or since it is dry erase cleaning job I needed to do.
Next, I have a set time each day allotted for cleaning. My cleaning time is in the afternoon. The kids’ do their chores in the morning. During my scheduled time I prepare all of my supplies in advance and write down the cleaning to be done. Then, I set my timer for 30-45 min. the time depends on what activities or appts. the day may hold.
Finally, I roll the dice and whatever it rolls on is what I do for the next 15 min. the time is sometimes extended to 20 min. depending on the activity. So that I can accomplish at least two tasks no more than 20 minutes per roll.
Best Ways to Make a Checklist
My next challenge activity is to make a checklist. My motivation mostly comes from seeing accomplishment. By creating a cleaning checklist it allows me to see what I have finished for the day in my housework. In addition to my checklist, I do not use the same cleaning checklist week after week. Part of the game for me is to have new one’s listed to keep it fresh.
As a type A personality I find a checklist to be soothing. Even if I put “do the dishes” at the top of my list, when they get done, I mark it off. Furthermore, I do not add to my checklist, nor do I make it long. Keeping the agenda short to five or six tasks tricks our minds.
From past experience, a long undone list does not motivate anyone. Creating a task list that shows completed jobs is one of my best ways for household fulfillment. As moms, we have enough on our plates. Creating games to challenge our cleaning puts a little zest in the day!
Set Up A Friends Group for Accountability
Finally, in addition to the dice game and checklist is my final option in best ways. This is to create an accountability group. A group of friends to keep each other accountable. Maybe its a text, or an email to check in weekly. It’s always more fun to clean with others’. Cleaning our homes encourages our family. Keeping them clean encourages us. As moms’ we have a responsible job of teaching the next generation to take pride in our homes.
Home doesn’t have to be Pinterest perfect, nor should we spend hours nagging to get them that way. Teaching our children simple tasks of making their bed is important. Along with the simple tasks’s of cleaning each room in the house weekly and picking up weekly.
Creating an inviting home brightens our outlook on family life and daily stressors. How good does it feel to walk into a “tidy” home? Not perfect. Livable so that we can enjoy time with our husbands and children.

Thanks. It was about 2 years ago that I picked it out and was going to paint and decorate with those colors.
That hasn’t happened yet. Maybe another 2 years?
