Lately our bucket list has us trying some new recreational card games. We have a lot of board games, but now we are trying something new. Card games are not something I am super good at because I like quick games. Most of these games fall into a category of quick.
Monopoly is one of my favorite games in the world, but after two hours I bail and hand my properties off to others’. Playing Euchre and Bridget have never been at the top of my priority list because they last for hours. If your like me and want some quick, but fun card games to play as a family read on.
Rat a Tat Cat Memory Game
First, I want to say this one came in runner up in our favorites. Playing was pretty easy and the game did not take very long. Memory work is required for this game, but I would easily say that a five year old could play well.
The goal of Rat a Tat Cat is to have the lowest score at the end of the game. A great game to play on game night as a recreational fun at home family. In addition to that it is great for memory and math skills.
Kings in the Corner
Kings in the Corner was not a favorite of our family. Initially it seemed very easy to play, but the kids soon tired of taking the Kings out to the corner, and with five in our family we ran out of cards quickly. Jokers are not used. Cards go from Kings down to Aces. Using eight piles in a descending order from Kings down to Aces alternating colors.
Winners are the ones with the most piles at the end when all of the cards are used and the deck is empty. Four is a good number of people to play with as five is too many. Piles were shorter and game play did not last as long. We did use a video on youtube to watch and understand how the game went went the Kings were placed to the side of the original pile. Overall a fun game.
Spit or Speed Quick Game
This game is good for two people. If you have more than tow people then have them break off into other groups to play. Quick game of thinking. First you will split the deck in half, and each player lays out five piles of cards.
First pile has one card face up. Second pile has one card face up, one card face down. Third card has two cards face down, one card face up.
Fourth pile has three cards face down, one card face up. Fifth pile has 4 cards face down, and once card face up. each player puts out a “spit” card in the center of the two players piles.
Players sit across from each other and use only one hand.
Players pull cards from their setup and place them on a spit pile. Play continues on with a few other details, but the winner is the one with no cards left. This is another great game to watch a YouTube vide on before playing. Therefore a must have for a recreational family night at home.
Egyptian Rat Screw Matching Game
Never hearing of this game, it ended up being our favorite. Super fun and would recommend any family to try it. More than two players can play, it moves quickly but not too quick. The object is to get all of the cards. Split the deck evenly between al of the players. We had five.
Do not look at your cards. The oldest person lays down a card first. Then move around the table clockwise. Cards remain facedown until your turn. If another player lays down a face card, you must beat it. Play another face card.
Each face card play has a different amount of chance to beat the next one. For example, if someone lays down a queen, the next payer can play two cards and try to be a the queen. Jacks- one chance, Queen 2 chances, and it moves up to four chances with an Ace.
If you do not beat the face card the person played they get the entire deck. This game can go on for a while when there are only two people left. But, again it is very fun for a recreational family game night.
Garbage as a Perfect Recreational Family Fun Night
The objective is to line up cards in a sequence order of 1-10. This game can be played with 2-3 players, more players will need an additional deck of cards. Deal each player ten cards. Place remaining cards in the center of the table. This will create a “draw” pile.
Each player will line their cards up in two rows of 5 cards each. Row 1 will be 1-5, and two 2 will be 6-10.
Player will make the top card from draw pile, then check the number pile. place the card in the number line it coordinates with by flipping and removing the card currently there. Next, the flipped care will be placed in its corresponding spot if applicable.
For example the first player draws a 5, player 1 will flip over the card that in front of them and place the f5 in that spot. If the flipped card is a number that card goes in the corresponding spot in his stacks. So on and so forth. Jacks and Queens are garbage. Not needed. Discarded.
Kings are wild and can be used in any position. wildcards can be moved on additional turns.
Play continues after one player has completed the ace to ten lineup. Player 2 will get a chance in a final attempt to tie the game. For better understanding I always watch a video to see how the game is played after I have read the directions. For some reason it helps me to understand it better.
Card games teach so many skills and add to the winter bucket list of affordable activities to make recreational family time a success.
