Earth day is April 22. It is not a huge holiday to some, but to alot of people this day is very important. That is why I found it important to write a post on saving money (my favorite thing to do) and recycling (my second favorite thing to do).
Recycling items can be in the form of second hand clothes, shoes, dishes, and purses. Or it can be plastic bags, bottles, bread bags, stained clothing, rags, old pants, or a broken wheelbarrow. What do I mean by a broken wheelbarrow? Well, instead of running out to buy a new one when ours broke we fixed it…several times. We fixed our broken wheelbarrow in so many different ways that this weekend when it broke, it really could not be fixed again. Isn’t that the true meaning of recycling? My recycling is saving the earth by less consumption. Reuse everything you can.
I want to teach my children to take care of our earth. This week we have been focusing on several activities that save money (making a bird feeder) and picking up trash by a shopping mall that we pass everyday. Both of these activities will give the kids a feel for appreciating the beauty that we have and to want to hold onto it.
Finally, instead of going out and buying a bunch of pencil holders how about decorating some soup cans after they have been cleaned out? It may end up being a great Pinterest project! There are many items in our home that instead of going out to “buy” something I look at what we have, or can it be made from scraps.
Our money is spent on tithing, kids, house, and splurging on vacations. If I did not make my own laundry soap, cut up rags out of an old shirt, own 10 chickens so that we have eggs, or shop at the goodwill then we would not have vacations. The kids would also be very limited on their sports…they still are limited because I am really not trying to run everywhere all of the time! Gas conservation…hello!
Take a look at your everyday activities and see what one thing you can change to make this earth last.
Cheers!
Michelle
