One of my favorite frugal tips from our frugal family is to recycle blue jeans. There are so many ideas on Pinterest for blue jeans. No need to go buy summer shorts, quilts, pot holders, expensive iPad holders or purses. Designing some personal projects will not only save you money on supplies, but also on household needs.
Number one topic for frugality is to make it before buying it. Items in our home can always be repurposed. As I sat at a piano lesson one day a woman and I began chatting. I mentioned her sweater and how unique it was. She informed me that she makes her shirts out of her older shirts. The sweater article that she was wearing was her own personal fashion design. That is one of my more favorite frugal tips to share. She and I discussed some great frugal family ideas to save money during one of my children’s piano sessions. In addition to repurposing old jeans, I know now that I can do the same with old sweaters.
Blue Jean Quilt
My mother-in-law made me a blue jean quilt for my son when he was born. It was made from her old maternity pants that she wore when she was expecting my husband. The quilt had many different types and colors of blue jeans in the quilt.
A rag quilt is easy to make, and videos can be found on youtube. My blue jean stash from all of the jeans we have is getting taller. One day, I will be able to also make a blue jean quilt. Mine will be out of my children’s old jeans, but the future quilt will still be made of memories.
Make a purse
No woman can have too many purses. For vacations I love to carry a smaller purse. I have a small purse that was made for me out of a pair of old jean material. Designing a creative pattern for the purse really made it special and one of a kind.
Purses can be made from one set of blue jeans, or have a patchy look. My personal preference is the patch look. Jeans are my favorite clothing and accessory, so I have a lot of future material to work with on projects.
Frugal Family Tips for Clothing
Blue jeans that get holes in them from the winter months make good shorts. Jean shorts are easy to make and go with anything. My boys’ are hard on summer clothes, so ripped jeans become summer shorts. As a frugal family we try to save and repurpose everything we can.
Blue jeans are heavy duty material and I know they will last for several washes. Kids’ may wear out the knees quickly, but the rest of the jeans last. My favorite part is that they wash well and the strings look stylish.
Recycling for everyday products
Pot holders, kitchen towels and much more are made from blue jeans. Our frugal family saves money by not running out to buy new jeans or shorts. My mother in law makes homemade blue jean easy projects. Blue jeans are a heavier material which helps the project to last longer. There are so many ways to repurpose old blue jeans.
