Creating a beautiful backyard garden doesn’t have to be expensive. There are affordable ways to make a backyard garden look inviting. If you love plants, diy and hold the desire to create a relaxing space then these backyard garden tips are for you.
A few years’ ago I began my path to gardening. I grew up with my parents gardening, and I wanted a garden of my own. My vegetable garden has been in existence for 15 years now. It is still growing and each time I add something new. Growth has been slow because I use what we have. This last year I added a fence, that was made from pallets. Most affordable backyard garden plans have to be diy. Imagination and creative vision play a huge part in adding beauty to a backyard garden for frugal families.
Make Your Own Compost Bin
One necessary part to a good, functioning backyard garden is a compost bin. For me, I don’t have some expensive wheel that spins the compost. I marked out a corner of my garden that was more shady than the rest. I added two factors into the creation of my compost bin. First, I didn’t want it to be far from the garden. Second, I didn’t want to have to clean it out or anything.
With those two elements in mind I set out to creat the space. Therefore, the compost bin is in the front corner of my garden so it can be easily raked into the garden each year. In addition to that the area is open without any sort of containment. I started the compost bin with cardboard boxes, our chicken manure and straw. Usually, I don’t throw in any food compost other than egg shells. Occasionally I will add banana peels. Most of my food scraps go to my chickens.
DIY Backyard Garden Pond
Some backyard gardens have ponds. Ponds are not expensive to create. If you want to save money, get all of the supplies and did a hole. Place a pond liner in the hole, add rocks around it to hold the moisture better. Finally, place pond friendly plants around it for added visual beauty.
Likewise, adding a deck or a mulched area for sitting to view the pond is not a bad idea. Most DIY ponds are not that expensive other than the labor. Money saving tactics is to do it yourself and save the rest. Water friendly plants can be added the next year to save more on the project.
Backyard Garden Fruit Trees
Another way to begin affordable backyard garden plans is to add fruit trees. Obtain them easily through seed growing, even though this may be easier. I have grown a peach tree from seed for several years in a row. This fall we will be planting apple seeds to grow for the next year. This way does take longer, but it is affordable.
Another way to get fruit trees at a discount is to visit a nursery or box store at the end of the selling season. Garden plants are not something they want to store for the winter, so they mark them down. If they do not look as healthy or have no leaves asking for a percentage off of the price doesn’t hurt.
Around Arbor Day the Federal Government has given away free fruit trees. Research in your area and locate groups or other volunteer charities that offer fruit tree starts to people for free.
Add a Rock or Stone Path to the Garden
Adding in a stone path to a backyard garden is appealing to the eye. It creates a focus to the garden design. I love to see a path in a garden whether it is made from mulch, chipped stone, pebbles, rocks, bricks or whatever is beautiful. Logs placed in a row can be an easy and natural way to build a path.
Procuring a path in a thrifty manner is not hard. Therefore, it may take some ingenuity, but it is doable. The first place to check is facebook marketplace. This is a great spot to find anything you want for free. Out of pocket costs are usually labor and the gas. Facebook marketplace has just about anything you could imagine. Lately, I have seen several offers on pavers and other stone for garden designs.
Create a Bird Santuary
This year I wanted a bird sanctuary outside of our front window. We have a picture window in our living room. Ideally, it should have cost several thousands of dollars to put together, but I used some research and creative ways to put it together. So far, I am only out about $200.00 on plants. For most of my plants I used bulbs that will come up the next year. My youngest son made a birdhouse for his 4H project. In addition to that my other second born son made a bench for a 4h project. Both of these will add to my bird sanctuary. At a 4h meeting they made bird feeders and we had a leftover swing from our play area. Once we tore it down due to the unsafe condition I saved the swing.
My bird sanctuary is almost done. Next year, my plan is to ask for a bird bath for Mother’s Day to complete the project. Backyard garden ideas come together under budget if we are patient to wait. My bench didn’t happen when I wanted it too, but it did happen. Waiting proved to be very beneficial for my garden space.
Any future garden plans do a little research on where to find it for free. Grow it or make it to save more money.
