There are some DIY frugal home heating hacks. Some may be used with caution in extreme cases such as power outages. We have not tried any of these in our home yet, but are currently reviewing a few for next winter.
Flower Pot Heater
This is an easy. simple, quick source of heat. Useful in emergency power outage situation. Must be watched at all times for safety. Children and pets should not be left alone in the room with this source of heat due to open flame.
Solar Air Box Heater
A solar air box heater is a homemade solar panel that attaches to the side of your home. Semi- easy insulation. Does have to be stored in the summer to use again each winter. This DIY Solar Air Box Heater will attract the sun into your window to heat up the room.
Largest expense would be the materials, and based on sales the price could be affordable based on the type of wood used. Time involved would be several hours to construct the solar box heater and install the setup to the house.
Skylights for Frugal Home Heat
Can be purchased at Home Depot. Labor would be the biggest cost, if needed. Self installation is possible. Costs associated with purchasing a skylight would equal out. The benefits would out weigh the cost. Permanent solar heat that would keep heat bills at bay. Placement of the skylight needs to be in the most efficient spot of the home. Remote control options are available. Benefits include fresh air, adds natural heat and sunlight to your home, increases value, will add depth to a room.
Solar Window Box
A solar window box attaches to a window. Moves heat into the room with a fan, and will work in a power outage. Can be used for solar cooking in the summer. Window box does not need to be removed each season. Benefits include: Easy installation, low material cost, heat bills will drop drastically, and off-grid heating is sustainable.
All of these choices are good ways to save money for the winter. Inflation is causing all of the utilities to go up. Some of these are great to know in case of emergencies, and other are good for anytime. Try one and see if it works. Any way that you can save money, try it, implement it, and make it a way of life.
