Homeschool preschool letter Z activities are the last of the letter of the week. Learning through the use of utilizing different flowers from the garden has been a technique that I used with all of my children as they went through preschool. Our daily garden walks were something they always looked forward to, and flower identification was a learning avenue.
Since then, one of my sons has decided to open a backyard nursery and loves to plant, grow and sell succulents, another one likes to help me plant my garden, one of them loves to eat what we grow and finally one is interested in worm composting. You never know where a daily walk will take you. Exposing them to beautiful parts of life and nature is important.
Homeschool Preschool Science With Flowers
There are so many different ways to study science with flowers. Flower identification, experiments, naming parts of the flower, discussing how to use flowers that bud in the garden for pollinating, and how bees affect flowers. That right there is a whole study in itself.
This week we are going to discuss pollination for flowers and why bees are important. The homeschool preschool flower study is a Zinnia. Using this flower which is an annual to discuss pollination with bees is easy. First, I would show a video of how bees are useful in the garden, then we would plant some zinnia’s. As the Zinnia’s grow have the preschooler watch and see which bees’ visit the flower. This can also be a great time to draw in the nature journal.
Letter Z Handwriting Activity
Letter Z handwriting activity is easy. I think personally, Z is one of the easiest letters to trace. Grab a copy of my free letter Z handwriting printable. It is fun and easy for kids to trace. First have them start at the front of letter Z and go straight to the right. Next, follow that line down to the next line that will lead into the third line. When I was teaching my kids I explained the “Z” as a Zig, Zag, Zig letter. You zig to the right, zag to the left, then zig back to the right.
My funny way of teaching them helped to create something that would attach the letter Z and how to draw it in their mind.
Music Study With Drawing
Music study is a great activity to do right before nap time. Turn on a classical music composer, pull up a beautiful picture of a zinnia and for 10-15 minutes allow them to draw what they see. The music relaxes them, and the drawing brings out creativity.
If you do choose to try this activity close to nap time remember they are tired and it may not be their most cooperative time. Another way to do music study with flowers is to have them sit down with you while you have music playing and they can review all of the flowers over the letter of the week program. I like this also as a calm down activity.
Nature Study for Preschoolers
Opening the door for nature study at a young age is very important. This is where the love and daily interaction with nature begins. When children are really young they should be taken out for daily stroller walks, and as they grow they learn to walk with mom. At this time is when mom is revisiting flowers, and their names. I also like to remind them what flowers are good for shade and sunny parts of the yard.
Eventually the homeschool preschool child will be able to start naming the different flowers on their own. Right now my children are much older, but part of my reminiscing and reminders of their preschool years’ come from looking through their nature journals. It is definitely a way to look through their world to see an image from their mind.
Also, I like to see how their journaling skills grow over the years.
Trying a letter of the week flower study brings so many benefits for young homeschoolers. One of the most beneficial parts is to see they love they have for gardening grow. I myself have learned a lot of different techniques and different flowers to place in my garden to get the best yield every year. If I didn’t know what type of flower to plant, then my garden would not produce as much as it does.
