Moving along with topics for spring in our recreational family activities takes us to time around the kitchen table. It isn’t just for eating, but for family bonding to take place. The weather is more rainy now, and with that indoor activities are necessary.
Here are a few great games and casual puzzles to try.
Recreational Games for the Kitchen Table
Who Am I? Is a game with post it notes. Choose a famous person. Write on the front of the post it note the phrase “Who Am I’ and the person’s name on the back. Have everyone go down a path of questioning. They can ask random questions like “Were you born in this decade” or “Am I Still Alive” to steer toward an answer. The person with the post it note may only answer “yes” or “no”. No details are allowed. Set a 2 min timer for each person so that play continues. Points are given for each post it note mastered. The person with the most post it notes at the end wins, or the person with a set number of points wins.
Another great game to try is an alphabet alliteration game. So it starts off with a word that starts with “a” such as alligator. Play goes something like this “ I went to Florida and found an alligator” then the next person starts with a “b” word and replaces “alligator”. I went to Florida and found an alligator and a bag”. Then the next person adds a “c” word until all of the alphabet has been used.
Easy Memory Games and Puzzles
Mental puzzles are fun to try. I am not good at them or riddles. Uncomplicated memory puzzles are easy for me, but ones that take abstract thinking send me into questions. Finding a bunch of random puzzles for memory work keeps all of the brain cells firing quickly. Most of these games are easy to try anywhere, even in the car.
Question games are fun and get everyone laughing. Ask a question and the other person answers with a question. Then someone else asks another question, and so on and so on.
Table Card Games for Kids
Beggar my neighbor is a card game we are new too this year. Only two players can play this game though. First deal out all the cards. Each person has one half of the deck. Lay down one card at a time. Both people taking turns.
Then, if an ace appears the other player must put four cards on top of it. For a King it is three, queen is two, and jack is one.
Finally, if another jack, queen or king cards get laid down it comes the first players’ turn again. They get to add more cards.
Random Games to Try
Word Association games are fun. One person says’ a word, then another person says a words that associates to that one, and it keeps going. I must with four boys’ this game gets very interesting. Associating words they hear and what is actually said is definitely two different realities.
Fast draw is another way to play charades, except it is drawing. Using index cards write up a stack of ideas. for instance “backstroke”. Someone draws a card and has one minute to finish. Others have to guess what was drawn. They have 2 minutes. A lot of fun will be had with this game. There has been many times that I have not even been able to interpret my own drawing because I was writing so fast.
Making time for family grows the bond between each person. Our goal for the games, and recreational family time is to create the bond that keeps our ties strong. All of the games and ideas listed are just a few ideas that we do as a family. Other inexpensive at home activities can be found in books at the library, or on Pinterest.
