We had such a fun day visiting the antique mall as part of our summer bucket list. All of the kids were able to find something they wanted. Each item had value from the past, and since I am a huge history buff this was exciting. I am not an avid antiques, but it is something to go back and see stuff from your childhood. Records were out by the time I was born, but I was able to tell my kids a little bit about them. It was fun watching them find all kinds of treasures from the past.
My sons’ were busy looking around and asking questions. Of course I found my two favorite items: bowls and cookbooks. I don’t know what it is, but I get lost for hours inside of old cookbooks. How about you? Here are some valid reasons to add antiquing to your frugal family summer bucket list fun.
Decorate On A Budget
Antique mall items are affordable, second hand and work in a budget well. Most people can find a good item if they search long enough. The antique mall we visited had many booths. Finding the comics section or toy section wasn’t hard. It is a good idea to know what you are looking for when you go.
Affordable Toys That Last
Some of the toys in this shop had held up for over 50 Years. On the other hand, my son found a toy that he had in his toy area. It looked like a little barn with a handle. He was very surprised to see that the barn had a price tag on it, but I reminded him someone else took care of the barn they had and were able to sell it.
Most of the toys were made as products that stand the test of time. Antiquing is fun to show the kids old games and remind them their toys may be worth money someday.
Unique Items No One Else Owns
Another great part to visiting an antique mall is the chance of seeing someone else with your toys or bowls is slim to none. I like the uniqueness of the purchase. Instead of being like everyone else check out the antique mall, or local shop. Sometimes the find is so unique that it is a once in a lifetime purchase.
Teaches Kids A Value Check
Learning about the past it’s important because if we don’t teach our kids it will be forgotten. At one point I showed the kids’ an old fashioned coffee cart. This was not something we have nowadays. As I explained to them why to use it and how it would be used to entertain others. In today’s world we don’t wheel a coffee cart into the dining area to chat with friends. We are lucky to see friends in person. Telling this fact to my son’s seemed important. Also, I couldn’t help but revel at the beauty. Unfortunately it was a find that had to be left at the mall. Purchasing the coffee cart would be a frivolous purchase because I don’t have anywhere to keep it. Therefore I left it there with the memories.
Teaching our kids’ lessons about the past, shopping, contentment and more is one of the bonuses to a summer bucket list. For more ideas on how to have frugal fun as a family sign up for my newsletter! Find me on Instagram @momsarefrugal.
